Nneka M. Barnes is an author, historian, genealogist, and founder of Barnes Legacy Publishing. For more than two decades, she has researched her family’s history, tracing generations through historical records, family stories, and the broader experiences that shaped Black American life. Her work is rooted in a commitment to preserving stories that might otherwise be forgotten, and helping families recognize the importance of documenting their own histories.

Barnes brings a multidisciplinary perspective to her writing, shaped by her background in business, information systems, human services, and public service. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Saint Augustine’s University, a Master of Business Administration from Morgan State University, and a Master of Science in Management Information Systems from the University of Maryland Global Campus. Across her professional and creative work, she has remained particularly interested in the ways history, family, identity, resilience, and individual choices shape the lives of people and the generations that follow them.

Her writing extends beyond genealogy and family history to explore personal growth, decision-making, grief and healing, childhood and family experiences, and the preservation of lived experience. Her body of work includes nonfiction, reflective works, guided resources, and books for children and families. While the subjects may vary, her writing is connected by a consistent purpose: to document experiences that matter, encourage thoughtful reflection, and create works that can inform, support, and remain meaningful to future generations.

As Founder and Publisher of Barnes Legacy Publishing, Barnes has extended that commitment beyond her own writing. She established the family-owned publishing company to create a home for meaningful works—both her own and those of other authors—while building a publishing legacy that can continue across generations. Through Barnes Legacy Publishing, she brings together her interests in writing, research, history, family, and preservation with a broader commitment to helping important stories find their place in print.

Her debut publication with Barnes Legacy Publishing, The Making of ME – Intentionally Erased: Reclaiming the Names, Legacy, and Excellence of My Family, reflects that mission by connecting generations of family history with the larger story of Black America. Through her writing and publishing work, Barnes seeks to preserve the past while creating resources that encourage others to document, understand, and carry forward their own legacies.

Her work continues with a growing collection of projects that reflect the range of stories she believes are worth preserving—from family histories and reflective nonfiction to children’s books and guided resources. Through each work, Barnes writes with an eye toward what will remain: the knowledge preserved, the conversations started, and the stories future generations will still be able to hold.
